Who will be Ethiopia's next prime minister?

Image
Hailemariam Desalegn's snap resignation as Ethiopia's prime minister last week set off a dramatic chain of events in a country that has seen mass, anti-government protests for several years. A state of emergency order soon followed the announcement, plunging Ethiopia even further into a state of political uncertainty. As it prepares to replace Hailemariam as the head of the party, the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) has been buying time to figure out its next move, In a country where the chairman of the ruling coalition has historically also taken on prime minister duties, questions continue to swirl around who could step in for Hailemariam. Advertisement But any successor will have a difficult task ahead, and appointing a new prime minister will likely not be enough to satisfy Ethiopians' demands for greater political reforms. "A change of guard is not what the people want," said Tsedale Lemma, editor-in-chief of

convoy of pro-government fighters entered Syria's Afrin region on Tuesday to support Kurdish fighters battling Turkey's military but immediately came under artillery fire. Syrian state television showed video of the convoy of pro-government forces deployed to help fend off Turkey's assault against Kurdish YPG fighters. State TV showed about 20 vehicles with heavy weapons mounted entering Afrin from the nearby village of Nubul. Dozens of armed men were on the vehicles waving Syrian flags and chanting pro-government slogans.

Nigeria bomb blasts cause deaths at fish market

Three suicide bombers have hit the town of Konduga in north-east Nigeria, killing at least 18 people. Two attacked a fish market and a third struck nearby, security sources said. Boko Haram jihadists are being blamed for the blasts, though the group has yet to say it was behind them. Boko Haram has killed some 20,000 people and displaced more than two million since it began a campaign of violence to create an Islamic state in the north of the country in 2009. The bombers struck on Friday evening in the town, which lies some 30km (18 miles) south-east of the Borno state capital, Maiduguri. Wider reports of the attack only emerged on Saturday..

Ethiopia's state of emergency to last six months

Image
A state of emergency declared in  Ethiopia  after the resignation of the country's prime minister will last for six months, the minister of defence has said, as the government seeks to stem political unrest amid long-standing demands for greater freedoms. The measure, which was first  announced  by state media after a cabinet meeting on Friday, includes a ban on protests and the dissemination of publications "that could incite and sow discord", Siraj Fegessa told reporters on Saturday. "The government has previously made several efforts to curtail violence, but lives have continued to be lost, many have been displaced and economic infrastructure has been damaged," Fegessa said, as quoted by Reuters news agency. The state of emergency order will be sent to Ethiopia's parliament within 15 days for ratification, the minister also said It will give law enforcement officers the power to detain anyone suspected of violating "the constitutional order&

New dawn': Ramaphosa outlines vision for South Africa

Image
Cyril Ramaphosa, the newly-elected South African president, has vowed to fight corruption, tackle unemployment and revive the economy as he outlined his vision for the country in his first State of the Nation address.  "A new dawn is upon us and a wonderful dawn has arrived," he said on Friday, a day after his swearing in ceremony. Members of parliament from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) on Thursday elected the party's leader as new president following the resignation of scandal-tainted Jacob Zuma. Ramaphosa thanked his predecessor for "the manner in which he approached" the "very difficult and sensitive process" of the political transition, with some MPs booing when Zuma's name was mentioned

Ramaphosa::we need to follow mandela example

Image
Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South Africans to continue the "long walk" Nelson Mandela began in a State of the Nation Address which touched on corruption, poverty, gender equality and racial divides. Mr Ramaphosa, who was sworn in as president yesterday, told those gathered in Cape Town to hear the speech that the country should look to Mr Mandela's example during what would have been his hundredth year. "We are continuing the long walk he began, to build a society in which all may be free, in which all may be equal before the law and in which all may share in the wealth of our land and have a better life," he said. Mr Ramaphosa's speech emphasises a feeling of hope which appears to have swept the country since he took power this week following nine years under Jacob Zuma's presidency. Mr Zuma's tenure was marked by allegations of corruption at the highest levels. Mr Ramaphosa stood on for the leadership of the African National Congress (ANC)
